BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference released its 2022 Spring Academic Awards, which include the sports of softball, baseball, and men's and women's golf. Union softball junior Grace White, baseball graduate student Josh Bozoian, baseball junior Grayson Swanson, women's golf junior Nicole Taylor, and women's golf senior Emma Korte were named GSC All-Academic. In addition, 46 Union athletes achieved GSC Honor Roll status.

The 46 spring honor roll recipients are the largest spring total for Union since joining the  GSC in 2012-13. The five all-academic selections match the most in one spring since 2019. These numbers do not include the spring of 2021 when COVID forced several fall sports to participate in the spring, elevating those 2021 numbers. 

The All-Academic teams are voted on and include sophomores and above with at least a 3.2 GPA and have had significant impacts in their specific sport. The GSC Honor Roll includes all student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of submission that have competed in outside competition.

White, a 5-foot-9 first baseman from New Johnsonville, Tenn., helped lead Union softball to its second GSC Tournament appearance in 2022. She appeared in 45 games and finished the season with a .305 batting average while recording 32 hits. White was also named the 2022 GSC Champion Scholar-Athlete for softball.

Bozoian, a 6-foot-3 outfielder from Chino Hills, Calif., was named second team All-GSC in 2022. He played in 39 games and recorded 47 hits. Bozoian was also fourth in the conference for slugging percentage (.662), sixth in the conference for RBIs (50), and third in the conference for home runs (14).

Swanson, a 6-foot outfielder from Greeley, Colo., was named GSC Player of the Week, NCBWA south region Player of the Week, first team All-GSC, ABCA All-Region, D2CCA All-Region, and NCBWA All-Region in 2022. He led Union and was seventh in the conference with a .374 batting average, led Union and was second in the conference with a slugging percentage of .741, and was third in the conference with an OPS of 1.170.

Taylor, a 5-foot-5 golfer from Sedalia, Ky., played in seven tournaments in the 2021-2022 season. Her average score was 83.41, and her best finish was T14 at the Spring Bulldog Bash.

Korte, a 5-foot-10 golfer from Metropolis, Ill., played in eight tournaments during the 2021-2022 season. She had two top-10 finishes, coming in sixth place at the Hillcat Classic and eighth place at the Tunica Cup. Korte's average score was 81.60, and her best round was a 73 at the Hillcat Classic.

Ten players from the softball team were named to the honor roll. These included Laken DiStefano, Idalia Alarcon, Bryleigh Carneal, Kira Finkley, Nicole Goggin, Fallon Groves, Maddy Ostrowski, Reese Taylor, Alyssa Ward, and White.

The baseball team had 19 players named to the honor roll, including Bozoian, Sam McMillin, Walker Adkisson, Ryan Aljancic, Blake Barrett, Carson Chavies, Stuart Edge, Ryan Evans, Trey Frierson, Sam Galbraith, Ryan Middleton, Britt Netterville, Tanner Parmely, Sam Poindexter, Slater Schield, David Schultz, Ben Smith, Swanson, and John Wheeler.

The women's golf team had 7 players named to the honor roll. These included Taylor, Karlie Alexander, Cecily Berry, Aubrie Cagle, McKinnley Korte, Kallie Robertson, and Emma Korte.

Ten men's golfers were named to the honor roll, including Trey Tidwell, Gray Campbell, Garrett McCraw, Kip Patterson, Timothy Pinkston, Blake Templeton, Blake Wolfe, JJ Zimmer, Ben Muha, and Anders Rider.
