BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference released the 2018 Fall Academic Awards. Union University had eight student-athletes selected to the GSC All-Academic teams and 62 student-athletes named to the GSC Honor Roll.Â
To be nominated for the all-academic team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore or above, having been at the school for one season, and have at least a 3.2 GPA. The all-academic teams are voted on by the SIDs and FARs in the conference.
Union's eight all-academic selections tied for the most in Union's history from Fall 2014. For men's cross country, Michael Drury was selected to the all-academic team. Drury is a first-time selection to the team. From women's cross country, Amanda Leatherwood and Gabbie Stevens were selected to the all-academic team for the first time. From women's volleyball, Meghan Delaney was selected to the all-academic team. Delaney is a first-time selection to the team, and she is the first Union women's volleyball player in history to be selected to the GSC All-Academic team. For men's soccer, Cole Asfour, Zach Boothe, and  Euan Morton were selected to all-academic. Boothe and Morton are first time selections for the team, while Asfour is making his second appearance on all-academic. For women's soccer, Anna Venckus was selected to all-academic. Venckus is a first-time selection to the team.Â
The honor roll is made up of all student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher, regardless of classification.Â
Union had 62 student-athletes on the honor roll. This was three more than last year and tied for second-most on the fall honor roll in Union history.Â
Men's cross country had six players named to the honor roll including Caleb Allen, Ronald Ayabei, Michael Drury, Jaden Hunter, Forrest White, and Joshua Whitney.Â
Ten women's cross country runners were named to the honor roll including Abigail Bergquist, Amanda Leatherwood, MaryKate Leatherwood, Jordan Meadors, Tessa O'Hara, Jackline Ruto, Brinley Schenk, Gabbie Stevens, Anna Tankersley, and Rebecca Tankersley.
Men's soccer had 13 players named to the honor roll including Cole Asfour, Elijah Barritt, Zach Boothe, John Crawford, Felipe Firmino, Jacob Greene, David Hurtado, James Jackson, Parker Miller, Euan Morton, Casper Nyberg, Gavin Scott, and William Valencia.Â
Women's soccer had 20 players named to the honor roll including Erin Crew, Hannah Daniel, Austen DeLoach, Candace Haney, Alli Herring, Hannah Hewett, Hannah Hilburn, Georgia Hopkins, Kirstie Jackson, Samantha Jones, Taylor Knight, Tiffany Linser, Amber Meade, Makaila Marsh, Natalie Nagy, Alice Nelson, Madison Studstill, Anna Venckus, Brooke Watson, and Madison Wirth.
Volleyball had 13 players named to the honor roll including Sarah Adams, Laurel Alexander, Kristen Bukowsky, Audrey Cagle, Meghan Delaney, Lisa Hamilton, Christa Karns, Claressa Kohler, Courtney Ondrus, Abbie Rahn, Rebecca Sexton, Alyssa Tatsch, and Anna Claire Winchester.Â
