Union places 72 student-athletes on GSC Fall Honor Roll, De Vries and Iorio named All-Academic

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Gulf South Conference announced the 2023 GSC Fall Honor Roll and All-Academic Awards Friday, and Union University placed 72 student-athletes on the list, including Stan De Vries on the Men's Soccer All-Academic Team and Rylee Iorio on the Women's Soccer All-Academic Team.

A record 1,197 student-athletes were named to the honor roll, representing a near 3 percent (2.92%) increase from Fall 2022. 712 student-athletes recorded a 3.50 GPA including 127 athletes with a 4.0 GPA.
All-Academic is a voted-on position and to be nominated, a player has to be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 minimum GPA and is a significant contributor to the team. The honor roll is for any varsity athlete who played against outside competition and has at least a 3.0 GPA. For De Vries, a 6-foot-1 senior from Utrecht, Netherlands, this was his first GSC All-Academic award. In the 2023 season, he was named CSC Academic All-District, DII CCA First Team All-South Region, and First Team All-GSC. He also played in 13 games with five goals, one assist, and 12 shots on goal.
For Iorio, a 5-foot-6 graduate student from Columbia, Ill., this was her first GSC All-Academic award. In the 2023 season, she was named CSC Academic All-District, Second Team All-GSC, and GSC Defender of the Week for the week of Oct. 10. She started 17 games, playing 1,468 minutes in goal and collecting 89 saves, five shutouts, a .809 save percentage, and a 1.287 goals against average. She also reached 300 career saves and became the all-time Union leader in career saves.

Women's cross country placed their entire roster on the honor roll including Addi AguayoHolly BlackwoodLindsey Dismuke, Camille Haas, Victoria MarkhamSydnee MeadowsMary Scott Tritt, and Ayla Young.

Men's soccer placed 14 on the honor roll including Alpay AltuntasJacob BlueOstian Bowen, Stan De Vries, Christopher Grill, Christian Harjanne, William Key, Alexander Lapkalo, Thaddeus McCanse, Kobi Mosely, Boton Nemeth, Samuel Newman, Hunter Santoscoy, and Pierre Van Tilburg.
