Phylis Anyango played volleyball at Union in 2003 and 2004, helping Union to its first-ever volleyball national tournament appearance.Â
Anyango finished with 1,054 career kills and was a 2-time NAIA All-American. She is one of only seven players to have at least 1,000 kills in a career. In her time here, she helped Union win a conference title and a program-first region title.
Anyango was named AVCA All-Region, NAIA All-Region, and TranSouth first team All-Conference in both years at Union. She added NCCAA All-American and All-Region in 2003.
In 2003, Anyango led Union to the TranSouth Conference Regular Season and Tournament runner-up, while also winning the NCCAA National Title. In 2004, she led Union to the TranSouth Regular Season and Tournament titles, a first ever region title, and first ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament. Union posted a record of 72-14 in her two seasons.
In the years since playing volleyball at Union, Anyango has been the leader in elevating the sport of volleyball in West Tennessee. She has coached in and has served as the club director for Jackson Juniors Volleyball Club and was one of the four original coaches in the club. In 2010, she received the Minority Coaches Scholarship. From 2007 to the present, she has been a volleyball official at the high school, college, and travel volleyball levels. In 2019, she became a National USAV National Volleyball Official. Anyango also was a 2019 TSSAA Distinguished Service Award honoree.Â
