Melissa Hayden Massey played volleyball for Union University from 1998 to 1999, her junior and senior seasons. Those two seasons were the first two seasons for Union’s varsity volleyball program.
She joins her sister, Lauran Hayden Martin (2010-11 class), and head coach, Brian Dunn (2017-18 class) as Union Sports Hall of Fame members. The Hayden sisters become the first sister combo in the Hall of Fame.Â
In her career, Hayden Massey earned numerous honors, including NAIA All-Region, TranSouth All-Conference twice, NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) All-American twice, and NCAA All-Region twice.Â
 Hayden Massey is second all-time in aces in a match (10), holds the record for aces in a season (99), first in assists in a match (75), assists in a season (1,970), and assists in a career (3,748).
After graduating from Union, Hayden Massey taught special education for seven years. She also started a volleyball club in the St. Louis area. It featured 70 teams for boys and girls. She and her family (parents and sister Lauren) ran the facility they owned for 22 years. She coached at a local high school for 18 years, posting 313 wins. She earned the USAV Gateway Region Meritorious Award in 2024 for contributing outstanding participation, motivation, and other services in the promotion of volleyball.Â
Hayden Massey married Union Alum and former men’s basketball player, Ryan Massey. The two have been married for 22 years and have four children, Trent (20), Riley (19), Sutton (16), and Aniston (13).Â
