JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University cross country teams are both listed as winners of the USFCCCA NCAA Division II Cross Country Scholar Team Award for the 2016 season. In addition, both Union teams finished with the highest GPA in all of NCAA DII this season.Â
The Union University women's team, coming off their second Gulf South Conference Championship in the past three years, posted the highest NCAA DII GPA at 3.94 as a team. The men's team was also had the high GPA among all NCAA DII schools at 3.76.Â
Union head coach Gary Johnson said, "This achievement is something our runners strive for each year. I feel fortunate to coach a group of young people that take schoolwork as seriously as they do the athletic commitment they have to Union. These teams are truly 'student-athletes'. It is our privilege to represent Christ and Union well through both our academic and athletic accomplishments."
In addition to the team awards, several Union runners were named All-Academic. On the men's side, Will Donelson and Jacob Whitney earned the honor. On the women's side, Abby Berends, Janey Berends, Sarah Fickley, Lindsey Jakeman, Amanda Leatherwood, Amy McKelvey and Rebecca Tankersley all earned the award.Â
