NEW ORLEANS - Union University women's cross country junior
Addi Aguayo was named the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week. Aguayo earned her first career win in Friday's Watson Collegiate Cross Country Classic in Clinton, Mississippi.
Not only did she win, but in doing so, handily set the Union program record time in the 6K event. Aguayo finished with a time of 21:27:80. The record time was more than 30 seconds ahead of her current teammate,
Ayla Young Cook's previous mark of 22:05:7.
Union head cross country coach,
Bailey Bell said, "We are so proud of Addi! She had a phenomenal race and is on pace for a historic season! However, if you really know, Addi, you know her most admirable traits are her humble work ethic and Christlike attitude toward her teammates. Addi is a consistent encourager, fierce competitor, and committed Christ follower. She truly exemplifies our ethos of commitment to excellence and sacrifice for solidarity on a daily basis"
The USTFCCCA award for Aguayo also represents the first national athlete of the week for Union's cross country program, men or women.
Aguayo has produced a very impressive season to this point with the postseason starting this weekend. She finished runner-up in the first three races of the fall, before winning the last regular season race.
Union and Aguayo now look forward to the Gulf South Conference Championship set for this coming Saturday, October 25 in Memphis, Tennessee.
