Union baseball takes two from LeMoyne-Owen

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball posted a double-header sweep over LeMoyne-Owen College Thursday afternoon, winning 7-3 and 8-1. With their most prolific offensive day of the season Union sprayed 21 hits around Fesmire Field getting 10 hits in game one and 11 in the second to snag the pair of wins. The wins put a stop to a nine game winless streak for Union, now 7-17 on the season. LeMoyne-Owen falls to 5-16.
 
In the first game,  a three run first gave the Bulldogs an early cushion. Caleb Warnimont whacked a triple into leftfield and scored when Jim Martin singled to right. Martin stole second for his first steal of the season and ran home on an Andrew Allen single to left. Michael Flores lifted a sacrifice fly to right field plating Zach Wylie for the 3-0 lead. Union put three more runs on the board in the third. A double to right center by Martin started the inning. After loading the bases, Wacey Russell was hit by a pitch allowing Martin to cross home plate. Another Flores sacrifice fly scored Wylie and Allen scored on the play as a result of an error giving Union a 6-0 lead. Anthony Owen doubled down the leftfield line to begin the top of the fourth. The Magicians Jorrell Johnson launched a towering two-run home run over the wall in leftfield for a 6-2 Union edge. The Bulldogs escaped further danger in the inning as the Magicians left the bases loaded. Flores got on after being hit by a pitch in the fifth. Trae Bain singled up the middle allowing Flores to run to third. Flores scored on a wild pitch giving Union a 7-2 edge. LeMoyne-Owen ended the scoring with a run in the sixth for the 7-3 final.
 
Martin had three hits and Allen two for Union. Joshua Wyant and Scott Myracle finished with two hits apiece for the Magicians.
 
Each starting pitcher went six innings. Chaz Wilson (2-2) evened his record with the win. Ian Garry (4-4) was tagged with the loss.
 
Wacey Russell began the action in the second game with a single up the middle. An RBI single to centerfield from Wylie scored Russell and gave Union a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs went up 2-0 when Warnimont scored on a Parks Flowers fielder's choice. The Bulldogs left runners on first and third in the first. LeMoyne-Owen threatened but stranded runners in scoring position in the second. Brad Royer singled and later scored on a Warnimont single in the second for a 3-0 mark. The Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the third. Flowers drew a walk and hustled to third on a Flores double. Flowers ran home on an infield single by Royer. Flores crossed home for a 5-0 lead when Russell got aboard with a fielder's choice. Union finished their scoring with three runs in the fourth. A Flowers triple scored Martin (walk) and Allen (double) for a 7-0 Union advantage. Flowers scored on a Flores groundout. In the sixth LeMoyne-Owen used a pair of doubles to score their run. Wyant doubled down the left field line and scored on a double from Myracle to right centerfield for the 8-1 final.
 
Royer and Warnimont each recorded two hits for Union. Wyant had two hits for LeMoyne-Owen.
 
Andrew Wilson (1-0) notched the win after coming on in relief of starter Will Embry during the second inning. Wilson went four and two-thirds innings to earn his first collegiate win. Myracle (1-2) lasted three innings for LeMoyne-Owen.  
 
Union hits the road for Gulf South Conference play Saturday at the University of North Alabama Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
