Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Miss. – The Union University baseball team posted a double-header split at Blue Mountain College Saturday afternoon. Union fell 4-3 in 11 innings in the first game, then posted a 5-2 win in the second game.
In the first game, the offense struggled early for both teams in their first games of the year. Union broke a scoreless tie with a run in each the fifth and sixth innings to lead 2-0. Blue Mountain responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Union tied the game in the seventh with another run. The run in the fifth for Union was unearned as
Brad Royer scored on a dropped fly ball, while a sacrifice fly from
Trae Bain in the sixth, and then an RBI double from
Andrew Allen in the seventh gave Union their three runs.
The scored remained 3-3 until the bottom of the 11th inning when Blue Mountain got an RBI single from Clark to score Davis. Davis reached on an error to lead of the inning.
Colin Hatch started for Union, tossing five innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Samual Davis allowed three runs as he faced three batters in the sixth, getting no outs.
Teddy Christie (0-1) tossed 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just the one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
In the second game, Union scored a run in the first, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the 5-2 win. Union got two RBI from
Jim Martin, and one each from
Hunter Smith and
Michael Flores. Seven different players posted one hit for Union's seven in the game. Union's
Derek Roof (1-0) tossed six innings in win, allowing eight hits, two runs, one earned with four strikeouts and no walks.
Cody Cunningham pitched around a hit batter and a single in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
Up next for Union will be a return trip to Blue Mountain Monday at 2:00 p.m. Union opens their home schedule, Wednesday at 3 p.m. versus Bethel (Tenn.).
