Box Score 3 CAROLLTON, Georgia- The Union University baseball team were swept in their Gulf South Conference at West Georgia the final weekend of the season.
Game One: West Georgia 8, Union 5
It was the Wolves that got off to the early lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single through the left side to give West Georgia the 1-0 lead.
Union gained their first lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout from
Bailey Holbrook that allowed
Tyler Mauzy to score followed up by an RBI double from
Hayden Lewis that plated
Ryne Roper. Union added to their one run lead with two more in the seventh when
Matthew Duncan came through with an RBI single to right center that scored Holbrook and
Austin Orr singled in
Zach Phillips for the 4-1 Union lead.
West Georgia added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but broke the game open in the eighth scoring six runs on four hits and two Union errors to put the Wolves up 8-4.
Union added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI groundout from Mauzy, but could not complete the comeback.
Teddy Christie started on the mound for Union cruising through 7.0 innings giving up just two runs, but ran into trouble in the eighth and was not able to record an out in the inning before being relieved by
Andrew Wilson.
Hayden Lewis lead the Bulldogs at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double while
Austin Orr also had two hits and an RBI in the game.
Game Two: West Georgia 8, Union 0
West Georgia kept the momentum from their comeback win in the first game of the afternoon scoring in the bottom of the first with a RBI double to left center for the 1-0 lead. The Wolves lengthened their lead in the fourth plating three more runs with an RBI single and finished off their scoring in the fifth in sixth with help from a bases clearing double to push their lead to 8-0.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for Union going 5.0 innings giving up five runs on eight hits.
Joe Hudson came into the game in relief in the sixth inning but could not record an out giving up three runs on four hits with
Andrew Wilson came in to finish out the game tossing the final three outs. Union managed four hits in the game including two hits from
Nolen Milton who finished the day 2-for-2 with a double.
Game Three: West Georgia 9, Union 2
Union got on the board first in the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon with a RBI ground out from
Dylan Moore scoring
Zach Wylie in the top of the first inning.
West Georgia was quick to answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first on a sacrifice fly out and an RBI single to lead 2-1. The Wolves scored five more runs over the next four innings pushing their lead to 7-1.
The Bulldogs finally got a run back in the sixth when
Charlie Ellis homered for the first time in his collegiate career to right field on a 1-0 count, but the long ball would be the final run for Union who would fall 9-2 in the finale.
Zach Phillips led the way at the plate for Union going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, but would not come in to score.
Skyler Harrison started for the Bulldogs but lasted 4.2 innings before being relieved by
Andrew Wilson who went 2.0 innings before giving the ball up to
Nate Moenning who finished out the game.
Union concludes the 2016 campaign on Tuesday at home against UT Martin with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
