Box Score 3 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team won the third game of a 3-game conference series at Christian Brothers University 12-3 Sunday afternoon. This followed a double-header sweep by Christian Brothers Saturday, 3-2 in 15 innings and 7-2. Union is now 12-23 on the season and 5-14 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers is now 10-25 overall and 3-18 in league play.
In Sunday's win, Union scored two runs in each the first, second, and third innings, before adding three runs each in the seventh and ninth innings. Union got doubles from
Kyle Bryan and
Andrew Allen as the only extra-base hits among the 19 total hits in the game for Union. It was the second highest hit total of the season, behind 20 in a 16-inning win over Freed-Hardeman March 25. Allen and
Brad Royer led Union with four hits each, while
Caleb Warnimont added three hits. Warnimont led with three runs, while Bryan led with three RBI.
Preston Thompson (1-4) earned the win, going seven innings allowing three hits, one unearned run, with five strikeouts.
In the first game Saturday, both teams scored a run in the eighth inning to set the scored at 1-1. Neither team scored in the ninth inning sending the game to extras. Both teams scored again in the 12
th inning to set the scored at 2-2. Then in the bottom of the 15
th inning, Christian Brothers scored on a single, sacrifice bunt, and single to win the game. Union pounded out 16 hits in the game, but left 15 runners on base. Warnimont and
Jim Martin recorded doubles as the only extra-base hits in the game.
Zach Wylie led the way with a 4-for-7 day.
Wacey Russell added three hits. Wylie and Allen each recorded one RBI for Union's two runs.
Teddy Christie started the game, going eight innings allowing just one run on three hits with a strikeout.
Trae Bain (0-2) took the loss, tossing the final 6.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Saturday's second game was scoreless through three innings. Union scored twice in the fourth. Christian Brothers responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Then Christian Brothers put the game away with six runs on five hits with one Union error in the fifth inning.
Samuel Davis (3-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned in 4.1 innings of work.
Derek Roof and
Will Embry tossed the final 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Union had just four hits, two from
Michael Flores.
Flores extended his hitting streak to 12 games on the season. He has now tied Wylie for the longest hit streak of the season with 12. Flores and
Andrew Allen are currently riding 14 straight game streaks of reaching base safely.
