Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team posted a 7-6 victory over NAIA No. 20 Freed-Hardeman University Tuesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. The game took 16 innings to decide. It was the longest game for Union in at least 18 years. The previous high was a 15-inning game versus Christian Brothers University in 2006.
The win moved Union to 9-19, while Freed-Hardeman dropped to 19-8.
Union scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Zach Wylie singled in
Brad Royer who singled to lead of the inning. The score stayed 1-0 in favor of Union until the fifth inning. Freed-Hardeman tied the game with a run in the top of the frame. However, Union responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Jim Martin led of the inning with a home run to break the tie. Then Wylie singled, moved up on an error, and scored on a single from
Michael Flores.
Freed-Hardeman seemed to break the game open in the top of the seventh with five runs on five hits in the frame. Union went 3-up-3-down in the bottom of the seventh and so did the Lions in the eighth.
Union tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Union got singles from
Parks Flowers, Royer,
Caleb Warnimont, and
Jim Martin. Warnimont and Martin, along with Wylie's fielder's choice each earned an RBI in the frame.
The Lions got two runners on base in the ninth, but did not score. Union went quietly in the bottom of the inning. Both teams got two runners on in the 12
th innings but did not score. Otherwise, neither team threatened much in extras, until Union's bottom of the 16
th.
Kyle Bryan led off with a single to left field. After a pop up on the infield, Royer reached on an error. Union loaded the bases when Martin's fielder's choice ended in another Freed-Hardeman error. Wylie recorded his third RBI of the day to win the game for the Bulldogs.
Union used four pitchers. Freshman
Chaz Wilson got the start, going five innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Trae Bain tossed an inning, allowing five runs on four hits.
Andrew Wilson followed with a scoreless inning, allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Then
Will Embry (1-1) tossed the final nine innings of the game, allowing no runs and just two hits with five strikeouts. Suttles (0-1) took the loss for Freed-Hardeman, tossing the final 3.1 innings allowing just one run on five hits. Smith started the game for the Lions, with Guske and Huber also pitching in the game.
Up next for Union will be a home series against Gulf South opponent Valdosta State (Ga.) University March 29-30.
