Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Union University baseball team lost two games in non-conference action at Henderson (Ark.) State University Wednesday afternoon. The originally scheduled March 4 games were delayed due to weather. Union fell in game one 7-4 and 11-3 in the second contest. Union dropped to 5-14 overall. Henderson State improved to 7-16.
In the first game, a three run home run put the Reddies on top in the bottom of the first. Henderson State made the score 7-0 with a four run fourth inning. Union, who had six hits in the game, did not get a hit until the fifth inning.
Andrew Allen singled to leftfield and scored on a doubled by
Wacey Russell.
Michael Flores drew a walk.
Davis Shoemaker advanced the Russell and Flores with a groundout to second base. A single by
Brad Royer scored the runners for a 7-3 score.
Jim Martin led off the sixth with a single to left field.
Zach Wylie singled to centerfield advancing Martin to second. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with a walk to Russell. A base hit by Flores plated Martin for the 7-4 final. Jon Luthe (1-2) got the win. Nick Vanthillo picked up his second save.
Chaz Wilson (1-2) took the loss for Union after pitching four innings.
Union took a 2-0 lead to begin the second game. An infield hit by
Caleb Warnimont gave Union a base runner for Martin. Martin launched a home run beyond the wall in right field putting Union ahead 2-0 in the first. It was the second home run of the season for Martin. The Bulldogs added another run in the second for a 3-0 score. A single to centerfield by
Kyle Bryan scored
Brad Royer, who got aboard with a double. The Reddies scored 11 runs on eight hits in the fifth off three Bulldogs pitchers to take command 11-3. Martin and Warnimont had two hits each in the game. Rob Thomas (1-1) was the winner for the Reddies.
Will Embry (0-1) took the loss, going 4.1 innings.
Union returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday taking on No. 20 Delta State (Miss.) University. The Statesmen (10-6, 9-3 Gulf South Conference) were picked to finish first in the Gulf South Conference preseason rankings.
