Union baseball splits with Lee in conference opening double-header

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team earned a double-header split versus Lee University in the first series of the season in Gulf South Conference play. Union (3-2, 1-1 GSC) took the first game 4-1 in a nine inning scheduled game. The second game, scheduled for seven innings, was won by Lee (7-2, 1-1 GSC) 4-1 in nine innings.
                                
In the first game, Lee scored first with a tally in the top of the first. Union did all of their damage in the fourth inning with four runs. Trae Bain singled to score Zach Wylie. Michael Flores singled to score Bain. Later in the inning, Jim Martin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn an RBI. Andrew Allen followed with a bases loaded walk.
 
Caleb Warnimont led Union offensively with a 4-for-4 day and two stolen bases.

Union's Colin Hatch (1-0) earned the win, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing one run on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Preston Thompson earned his first save as a Bulldog, tossing two scoreless innings with one hit, a strikeout, and a walk.
 
In game two, Union scored their run in the third on a double from Wacey Russell. Lee tied the game in the fifth. The scored stayed 1-1 entering extra innings. In the eighth inning, Lee got the first two runners on base, and had runners on second and third with one out. However, Cody Cunningham entered the game to retire the final two batters of the eighth to keep the score tied. Union went quietly in the eighth. Then in the ninth, Cunningham's magic ended as Lee plated three runs highlighted by a 2-RBI hit from Nelo. Union again went quietly in the ninth.
 
Two Lee pitcher, Uherek (13) and Briner (2) combined to strikeout 15 Union hitters. Uherek went seven innings in the no decision, while Briner earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Teddy Christie started for Union, going six innings, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Samual Davis tossed 1.1 innings, while Cunningham (0-1) took the loss, tossing 1.2 innings with four hits and three runs.
 
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series at 1 p.m. February 16.
