Union men’s soccer advances to NCCAA region title match after 8-0 win

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team posted an 8-0 victory over Tennessee Temple University in the semifinal round of the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament. Union improved to 10-3-4 overall, while Tennessee Temple ended their season at 7-12.
 
The region tournament is being played at Union's Smith Soccer Complex. Union, the top seed in the region and No. 9 team in the NCCAA National Rankings, will host third-seeded Covenant (Tenn.) Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the championship match. Covenant upset second-seeded Campbellsville 4-1 in the other semifinal.
 
Union scored twice in the first 10 minutes with goals in the seventh and eighth minutes of play. Kemal Gogic and Guilherme Reis scored to put Union in control. Krister Andreassen added the team's third goal of the first half in the 25th minute of play on a penalty kick. Union led 3-0 at the half.
 
In the second half, Union scored four of their five second half goals in a span of 11 minutes. From the 52nd minute through the 63rd minute, Union got goals from Seth Guiler, Leo Santin and two from Felipe Araujo. Araujo completed the hat-trick as he added Union's final goal in the 69th minute to set the final at 8-0.
 
Union got assists from Clayton Martin, Diego Santos, Gogic, Guilherme Dorigo, and three from Guiler.
 
Rainer Pires played 60 minutes in goal for Union recorded one save, while Matt Kesler finished the last 30 minutes with one save. Tennessee Temple's Josue Fernandez played in goal for 82 minutes, allowing all eight goals and getting nine saves. Nelson Garley finished the final eight minutes with two saves.
 
Union outshot Tennessee Temple 32-3 in the match, including 19-1 in the second half. Araujo led Union with seven shots, while Reis added six shots.
