Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University softball team defeated Delta State University on Sunday afternoon for the Lady Bulldog's first Gulf South Conference win of the 2019 season.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Delta State dropped to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Union defeated Delta State 5-3. In the first inning, the Kelly Byrd had a two run homer for the Lady Statesmen. In the third, Union's Kaitlyn Kelley doubled to right center, bringing in Sarah Smith and Alyssa Ward to tie the score up. Delta State scored off a double to take back the lead in the bottom of the third. In the sixth inning, Kelley scored off an error for the Lady Bulldogs, and Gabby Morris added a run to give Union the lead. Peyton Mathis doubled to bring in Ashten Petty for Union's final run.
Gabby Morris earned the win for Union, tossing seven innings allowing four hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Kelley, Haley Barnette, and Mathis all had one hit for the Lady Bulldogs.
Union finishes the series tomorrow, February 25 at Delta State with a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m.
