MONTGOMERY, Ala. — After earning a split in the first two games of the series against No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery, Union softball battled in Saturday's finale but came up short in a 3-0 decision.
Facing one of the top teams in the country, the Lady Bulldogs (14-25, 7-17 GSC) kept things competitive throughout, holding AUM to just five hits and three runs across seven innings. However, Union's offense couldn't find the timely hit, finishing with three hits on the day.
In the circle, Rylee Moore delivered a solid outing against a high-powered AUM lineup. The right-hander went six innings, allowing just three runs while working around traffic and keeping Union within striking distance.
AUM broke through in the second inning with an RBI groundout before adding another run in the third on a double to extend the lead to 2-0. The Warhawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, but Union's defense limited further damage and avoided a bigger inning.
The Lady Bulldogs had their best chance in the fourth inning. After Moore reached and moved into scoring position, Chloe Jones delivered a single to put runners on the corners with two outs. AUM escaped the threat with a strikeout to keep Union off the board.
Union also put two runners on in the fifth behind singles from Paige Garetson and Sydney Scott, but again couldn't capitalize as AUM's Reese Cauley worked out of the jam. Cauley went the distance in the circle, striking out six and limiting Union to just three hits.
