No. 1 Union women cruise in Christmas break action

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 96-53 win over Fisk University Friday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union, ranked No. 1 in the both the WBCA and D2SDIA national polls, improved to 12-0 on the season. Fisk is now 3-11. 

This game marked the final regular-season non-conference game of the year for Union. The Lady Bulldogs will play an exhibition game Saturday, December 29 at Western Kentucky before stepping back into Gulf South Conference player January 3 at home versus Lee. Union scored first in the game with a layup from Morgan Martin, followed by a Fisk basket to tie the game. Union then scored five straight including a 3-pointer from Kennedy Childers to take a lead they would never give up. Union led 29-16 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Fisk got as close as nine points a few times. However, Union extended its lead to as many as 21 in the first half and settled for a 49-29 lead at the break. 

Union led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter, including the 76-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. A free throw from Caylee McLennan gave Union its largest lead of the game, 96-53, with 24 seconds left. That score proved to be the final. 

Ten of Union's 12 players scored in the game, including five players in double figures. Tiffany Rechis led the way with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Kennedy Childers and Morgan Margin added 14 points each, while Jada Smith scored 12. Avree Carpenter added 10 points, while Deja Graves grabbed 13 rebounds. Childers added her second double-double of the year with 10 boards in the game. Eli Pratt scored a career-high eight points in the win. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 33 percent (9-27) from 3-point range, and 58 percent (21-36) from the free throw line. 

Union out rebounded Fisk 62-36, including 26-13 offensively. Both teams turned the ball over often with 24 for Fisk and 18 for Union.  

Fisk was led by Lashae Brown with 15 points, while Jayla Long and Andria Thomas scored 11 points each. Thomas completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Fisk shot 30 percent from the field, 16 percent (3-19) from long range, and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.
