BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Union University women's basketball lost in exhibition play Saturday night at Western Kentucky University 77-65. Union, ranked No. 1 in both NCAA D2 national polls, remains 12-0 on the season. Western Kentucky, playing this game as a regular season game, improved to 6-8 on the season.
Union was down by just three points, 58-55, with eight minutes to play following a 3-pointer form
Tiffany Rechis. Western Kentucky then posted a 12-0 run to lead 70-55 with 4:42 left to play in the game. Union outscored WKU 10-7 over the final four minutes but could not recover.
Union trailed 34-29 at the half. Union led twice in the game with the last lead coming 11-10 in the first quarter.
Kennedy Childers hit five 3-pointers in eight tries and led Union with 18 points. Union's season leader in points,
Morgan Martin, finished with 15 points and fouled out late in the game.
Jada Perkins scored 12 points for Union.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 47 percent from the field, 50 percent (10-20) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (5-7) from the free throw line. Union committed 21 turnovers in the game and had 26 rebounds.
Western Kentucky was led by Abdelgawad with 26 points. Givens and Elgedawy added 13 points, while Brewer scored 11 points. The Hilltoppers shot 53 percent from the field, 24 percent (4-17) from long range, and 75 percent (21-28) from the free throw line. WKU committed 16 turnovers and had 29 rebounds. WKU outscored Union 27-8 in points off turnovers.
Union will not step back into Gulf South Conference play for the remainder of the regular season. Union will put its 4-0 league record on the line with a pair of tough home games starting Thursday, January 3 versus Lee and then Saturday, January 5 versus Alabama Huntsville.
