Box Score 3 FLORENCE, Alabama- The Union University baseball team won their Gulf South Conference series at North Alabama taking two games to improve to 18-21 on the season.
Game One: Union 8, North Alabama 0
Neither team could get the offense going over the next five innings, but the was the Bulldogs that broke the silence when
Hayden Lewis homered in the top of the eighth driving in Moore and Mauzy to stretch the Union lead 5-0. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the ninth when Mauzy was hit with the bases loaded allowing Duncan to score. Then
Austin Orr came in on the very next batter on a passed ball and finally
Ryne Roper singled that pushed home
Zach Wylie to set the final at 8-0.
The real story of the game was
Teddy Christie who tossed a complete game shutout going nine innings giving up only three hits while striking out six batters.
Dylan Moore led the Bulldogs with two hits and two RBI while
Hayden Lewis hit his second homer of the season driving in three runs.
Game Two: North Alabama 7, Union 1
North Alabama took the momentum early in the second game of the afternoon following the shutout in Game One when Taylor Hayes launched a ball over the fence driving in three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
North Alabama broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth scoring four more runs to set the eventual final score at 7-1.
Hayden Lewis was the only Bulldog with multiple hits going 2-for-3 with two singles.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for the Bulldogs going 5.2 innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out four batters.
Joe Hudson finished the game tossing the final out for Union.
Game Three: Union 9, North Alabama 6
Going for the series win on Sunday, Union got to work early when
Hayden Lewis doubled scoring both
Dylan Moore and
Tyler Mauzy in the top of the first to give Union the 2-0 advantage.
North Alabama tied the game in the bottom half of the first on two RBI doubles that set the score at 2-2.
Union was quick to answer and regained the lead in the top of the second scoring three runs including an RBI double from
Matthew Duncan that gave the Bulldogs the three run lead. They added to that lead in the fourth when
Dylan Moore homered for third long ball of the year that pushed
Tyler Mauzy in to score putting Union up 7-2.
Following a run from the Lions in the fifth, Union scored two more in the sixth to go up 9-3. North Alabama made things interesting in the late innings with a solo homer in the eighth then back-to-back RBI hits in the ninth to pull within three runs of the Bulldogs, 9-6. However, Union closer
Joe Hudson closed the door giving Union the series win.
Matthew Pickard started the game for Union going 8.0 innings giving up just four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts to earn the win.
Dylan Moore went 3-for-4 in the game scoring three runs and driving in four with a double and a home run.
Hayden Lewis kept up his hot hitting going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles.
The Bulldogs travel to Henderson State on Tuesday for a double header at 4:00 pm before returning home next weekend to face Alabama Huntsville in a Gulf South Conference Series on Saturday and Sunday.
