ROME, Ga. – The Lady Bulldog softball team dropped three games against No. 3 Shorter University in a double-header Friday, February 19 and a single game Saturday, February 20. Union fell to 1-5 in Gulf South Conference play, and have an overall record of 2-13. The Lady Hawks improved to 9-1 on the season, and are undefeated in league play with a record of 6-0.
In the first game on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs got one lone hit in the top of the fifth inning with a bunt single by
Madison Tennyson. Shorter got their first run in the bottom of the first inning, and busted the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Paige Taylor got the loss for the Lady Bulldogs going 2.1 innings giving up four hits and three runs. Shorter's Payton Lippert got the shutout win going five innings with four strikeouts, and gave up just one hit.
Again, the Lady Hawks got things going early scoring four runs in the first inning. Going into the 5
th inning, Shorter led Union 7-0. Trying to keep their hopes alive, the Lady Bulldogs finally got on the board thanks to a single by
Emily Bennett that scored
Marley Dyess. Union was able to keep the Lady Hawks from scoring in the bottom of the fifth, but Shorter fought back to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game by way of mercy rule. Brittany Cagle got the win for the Lady Hawks going 3.0 innings, giving up one run on one hit. Hannah Draper finished the game for Shorter throwing three shutout innings. Taylor got the loss giving up four hits and four runs.
Cassie Mills and
Madison Zablocki came in for relief giving up a combined five runs.
Saturday, the Lady Hawks dominated the Lady Bulldogs. Shorter scored 11 runs in the game; two in the first inning, two in the second inning, and seven in the third inning. Union only managed to get two hits in the game, coming from
Emily Bennett and
Samantha Ortiz. Taylor (2-9) took her third loss of the weekend going just 2.0 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits. Kalei Kimbrell got the win for the Lady Hawks getting the five inning shutout.
The Lady Bulldogs will have their home opener Thursday, February 25 in a double-header against Asbury College at 4pm and 6pm.
