CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team lost 71-67 at Lee University Thursday evening. Union dropped to 12-6 on the season and 6-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 5-12 overall and 3-9 in league play.
Union has now lost six straight road games and is 1-6 in road games this season in league play.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than six points at any time. Union claimed a six-point advantage in the first half, while Lee posted a six-point lead late in the second half.
Union's only lead of the second half was on a 3-pointer by
KC Goodwin to open the half, turning a 35-34 halftime deficit to a 37-35 lead. It was short-lived as Lee responded to regain the lead. Lee held a lead until Union finally caught the Flames and tied the game at 65-65 with 2:23 left in the game. The teams went over a minute without scoring before Lee regained the lead with one of two free throws to lead 66-65 with one minute left. After a Union miss from the field, Lee answered with a 3-pointer to push their lead to 69-65 with 20 seconds left. Union missed again and Lee hit a pair of free throws to reach their largest lead of the game, 71-65. Union got a layup as time expired to set the final at 71-67.
In the first half, Union maintained the lead for most of the way, allowing a few ties along the way. However, with 1:25 left in the half, Lee finished a 6-0 run to lead 35-32. Union got a jumper from
Brennan Bowling with one minute left. It was the last basket of the half for either team.
Union was led by
Marterrace Brock with 16 points.
Ashanti Day scored 14 points, while Goodwin added 13 and
Jordan Montgomery scored 10 points. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 32 percent (7-22) from long range and 75 percent (18-24) from the free throw line.
Lee was led by Bryce Copeland with 12 points. Levi Woods and Stephan Burrows each added 11 points, while Elgrin scored 10 points. The Flames shot 43 percent from the field, 46 percent (10-22) from 3-point range and 56 percent (9-16) from the charity stripe.
