Union men explode for 109 points in win at Shorter

ROME, Ga. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 109-96 win at Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 13-6 on the season and 7-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 9-10 overall and 4-9 in league play.

The win for Union also snapped a six-game GSC road losing streak and kept the Bulldogs in the mix in the GSC standings with nine games left to play. Union remained in a three-way tie for fifth place in the standings and is just three games out of first place.

Union scored first on layup from Serigne Mboup but then found themselves down by five after a 7-0 run from Shorter. The home Hawks led by as many as seven points in the first half before Union responded and took the lead for good, 25-24 with 9:11 left in the half.

Union was not finished as they extended their lead to as many as 13 points several times in the first half, the last being a 59-46 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Union continued to dominate, pushing their lead to as many as 26 points, 94-68, following the seventh 3-pointer on the night from Roy Bullock. Union led by 22 points, 105-83, with 2:32 left in the game. Union coasted down the stretch and Shorter hit some big shots to set the final at 109-96.

This was the highest point total of the season for Union and third time the Bulldogs hit the 100-point mark.

Union shot 65 percent in the game including 69 percent in the first half. The Bulldogs made 50 percent (10-20) of their 3-pointers and was 87 percent (27-31) from the free throw line.

Mboup scored 19 points, Jordan Montgomery added 14 points, while Ashanti Day posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. There must be something about the 23rd day of the month as Bullock's previous career high was 25 points in a game, November 23, 2013.

Shorter was led by Trevor McDade with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Daniels scored 18 points, Amonte Potter added 14, Phil Taylor and Cole Birchfield added 12 and Matt Catanzano scored 10 points.
