Union baseball takes first region loss, 5-0 to Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – A rash of hit batters spoiled the Union University baseball team's shot at victory in a championship bracket Wednesday afternoon on Olympic Field. A four-run fourth keyed top seed and host Lee University to a 5-0 win. Union slips to 13-34 on the season. Lee is now 32-17 with the win.
 
The Bulldogs missed an opportunity in the third inning to get on top. Union had runners at second and third with two away when Wacey Russell doubled to right moving Caleb Warnimont to third. The Bulldogs finished the inning unable to push a run home. Four hit batsmen, a walk and a pair of hits allowed the Flames to take a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Michael Flores and Andrew Allen opened the Union half of the seventh. Brad Royer delivered a sacrifice bunt giving Union runners at second and third. Union with only one out was unable to produce a run. A single run in the eighth put Lee up 5-0.
 
Jeremy Stawychny (7-4) picked up the win. Samuel Davis (3-3) took the loss. The Bulldogs held a 10-8 edge in hits.
 
Union will play an elimination game at 12:00 p.m. Thursday versus Hiwassee College.
