Union baseball takes final game at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University baseball team picked up a Gulf South Conference win Sunday after losing twice Saturday. Union improved to 8-19 overall and 3-10 in the Gulf South Conference with the 6-1 win. The Lions won Saturday's doubleheader 7-6, 12-6. North Alabama is 15-16 and 7-11 in GSC action.
 
Game one: Union began the weekend set with promise taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Andrew Allen singled and scored on a wild pitch. Parks Flowers delivered a single to plate Michael Flores and Brad Royer. A two run fifth pulled North Alabama within a run 3-2. Union went back up three in the sixth. Flores doubled scoring Allen and Zach Wylie for a 5-2 Union lead. The Bulldogs widened the margin to 6-2 in the seventh. Caleb Warnimont scored on an Allen single. Union left the bases packed in the seventh as they looked to further separate from North Alabama. A three run seventh by North Alabama reduced the lead to 6-5. The Lions tied the game in the eighth then won it 7-6 in the ninth with a bases loaded walk.  

Ted Christie made the start for Union and went six and one-third innings. Derek Roof (2-4) came on in relief of Christie and shouldered the loss. Five Bulldogs had two hits in the game; Allen, Flores, Jim Martin, Warnimont and Wylie. Austin Carpenter (2-2) got the win relieving starter Brantley Claunch in the seventh.

Game two: Union trailed early and never recovered dropping a 12-6 contest. North Alabama put up four in each of the first two innings pushing out to an 8-0 advantage. The Bulldogs got a solo run in the fourth when Wylie scored on a Flores double. The Lions drove in four more in the fifth for a 12-1 lead. Union scored five runs on five hits in the sixth for the 12-6 final. Flores singled home Wylie and Allen. Kyle Bryan singled allowing Flowers and Flores to score. Wacey Russell finished the scoring by crossing the plate on a Martin sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Preston Thompson (0-3) allowed eight runs on eight hits while facing 17 batters in two innings of work. Allen and Flores each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Riley Sanderson (4-4) was the victor going five innings.

Game three:  Union fell behind 1-0 in the second inning. The Bulldogs leveled the game 1-1 in third. Kyle Bryan singled to begin the inning. A single off the bat of Martin scored Bryan. Union plated three runs in the sixth to raise the lead to 4-1. Allen singled and scored on a wild pitch. Brad Royer knocked home Flowers and Bryan with a single. The Bulldogs extended the lead with two more runs in the seventh.  Russell singled driving in Wylie and Allen for a 6-1 score. North Alabama cut the score to 6-3 with two in the eighth.

Samuel Davis (2-0) went seven innings to earn the win in his second collegiate start. Derek Roof picked up his first save coming on in the seventh with runners on the corners. Royer and Russell each had two hits for Union. Kyle Conkle (1-3) took the loss for North Alabama.

Union hosts Freed-Hardeman Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
