Two multi-run innings hampered the Union team . In game one a nine run fifth inning propelled Delta State to a 10-2 win. The second game featured a three run sixth that helped the Statesmen claim a 4-0 victory.
In the first game, what looked to be a certain four six three double play in the fifth inning turned into an avalanche for Union. A ball off the bat of Brent Langston in the direction of
Caleb Warnimont at second base was interrupted when it hit the field umpire resulting in both base runners (Ricky Velez singled to centerfield) to hold their position. The Statesmen used the play to fuel a nine run inning on nine hits. The game was 0-0 entering the fifth inning.
The Bulldogs had opportunities in the fifth and sixth leaving runners at first and third with one out in each frame.
Union scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth and left runners on the corners.
Jim Martin raced across home plate on a
Wacey Russell single to right field. A single to centerfield by
Michael Flores scored
Andrew Allen.
An error and a balk by Union helped Delta State score an additional run in the ninth for the 10-2 final.
Michael Manley, a 2013 Daktronics all-America second team selection kept his record (4-0) unblemished in seven innings of work.
Derek Roof (2-3) suffered the loss going five innings.
In the second game, a solo home run by Thibodeaux
in the third was all the Statesmen needed, but they tacked on three more in the fifth for a 4-0 win.
With a run earlier in the sixth head coach
Brent Fronabarger paid a visit to
Preston Thompson with two away and two on (first and second). The ensuing batter knocked Thompson out of the game by lacing a double into left field resulting in a 4-0 Delta State lead.
Union had chances in the final two innings but stranded two runners in each inning.
Brad Royer delivered two hits in the game for Union. It was the second multi-hit game of the season for Royer, who had three hits against Ohio Dominican.
Jonathan Moody (3-1) who played for Dyersburg (Tenn.) State Community College last season picked up the win with his first complete game.
Thompson (0-2) pitched a strong five and two-thirds innings.
Hits have been hard to find for Union. The Bulldogs have gathered eight or more hits in only seven of their 21 games. Union is 3-4 in those seven outings. Of those seven games two have been in Gulf South Conference play with Union going 1-1.
The next action for Union is a nine inning game Tuesday at home against Arkansas at Monticello beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Boll Weevils (17-10) will be wrapping up a nine-game road trip Tuesday.
