No. 2 West Florida sweeps Union in 3-game series

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Union University baseball team played a three game series at No. 2 University of West Florida this weekend. The No. 2 Argonauts topped Union 6-2 and 8-1 in a Saturday double-header. Union was defeated 9-0 in the series finale Sunday. Union dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida improved to 16-2 and 11-0 in GSC play.

Union was out hit during the series by West Florida 37-11.

In the first game, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Zach Wylie led off with a double to left field and ran to third on a ground ball by Andrew Allen. A groundout by Wacey Russell scored Wylie for a 1-0 lead. The Argonauts scored three runs in the bottom of the frame making the score 3-1. Brad Royer mashed a home run off the left field fair pole giving Union a 3-2 advantage in the third. West Florida added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth for the 6-2 final. Union had six hits from six different Bulldogs in the game. Dawson Brown (3-0) went six innings for the win. Colin Hatch (1-2) took the loss pitching 4.1 innings allowing five hits and striking out three.

West Florida had a 4-0 lead in game two after scoring three in the second inning and one in the third before Union tallied their run. The Bulldogs posted their run in the fifth. Davis Shoemaker singled to left field. Kyle Bryan drew a walk that pushed Shoemaker to second. A sacrifice bunt by Caleb Warnimont moved Shoemaker and Bryan up a base. A RBI groundout by Royer plated Shoemaker for a 4-1 score.  The Argonauts tacked on three more in the fifth and another in the sixth for the 8-1 final. Union struggled at the dish getting only three hits in 23 at-bats. Dayan Rodriguez (3-0) picked up the win with his first complete game of the season. Ted Christie (0-3) was tagged with the defeat.

Game three started with the Argonauts scoring twice in the first, third and fifth innings for a 6-0 edge. A three run seventh upped the West Florida lead to 9-0. Offensively Union went down in order in five of the nine innings. Russell and Warnimont were the only Bulldogs to have a hit in the game with each doubling along the leftfield line. Jordan DeLorenzo (5-0) tossed six innings with 11 strikeouts for the win. Union struck out a season high 16 times in the loss. Making his first appearance since a Feb. 22 start, Derek Roof (2-2) went 4.2 innings and collected three strikeouts.

Union stays on the road for a doubleheader Wednesday at Henderson (Ark.) State University with a 12:00 p.m. start.
