Union baseball splits a double-header with Shorter

JACKSON, Tenn. – Union and Shorter (Ga.) University each won a game on Fesmire Field Saturday. Union won the first game 3-2 in 11 innings. Shorter prevailed in the nightcap 7-4. The Bulldogs stand 5-9 on the season, 2-3 in the Gulf South Conference. The Hawks are 5-11 overall and 4-4 in GSC play. The two teams meet again Sunday with a single nine-inning game starting at 1:00 p.m.
                        
In the first game, Union let a golden opportunity to take an early lead vanish leaving the bases loaded in the first. Shorter took a 1-0 lead in the third. Union tied the game in the fifth. Brad Royer drew a walk and moved to second when Jim Martin took first after being hit by a pitch. Zack Wylie laid down a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to second and third. Royer tied the game 1-1 when the Hawks starting pitcher Colton Cross mishandled a put out attempt of Wacey Russell at first base. The Hawks put another run on the board in the sixth for a 2-1 score. Martin led off the seventh with a triple to right centerfield. A groundout by Wylie scored Martin to tie the game 2-2. Union plated the winning run in the 11th. Andrew Allen took first after being pegged with a pitch. A sacrifice by Michael Flores allowed Allen to move to second. Allen ran to third on a single to right field by Davis Shoemaker. Caleb Warnimont skied a sacrifice fly to leftfield deep enough to allow Allen to run across home plate for the 3-2 Bulldogs win.
                                             
Shorter out hit Union 13-7. The Bulldogs stranded 17 runners, while the Hawks left 10 on base. Samuel Davis (1-0) recorded the win for Union, Chadd Felder (1-2) took the loss.
                                                     
In the second game, Shorter had two hits and scored twice in the second to take a 2-0 advantage. The Hawks added three runs in the fourth. Dustin Evans had a big two out hit with a two-run home run over the wall in left field that pushed the lead to 5-0. Shorter tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth for a 7-0 score. A two-run sixth from Union made the score 7-2. Martin walked and moved to second when Wylie was hit by a pitch. Allen roped a single into leftfield scoring Martin and Wylie. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the seventh with Shoemaker and Warnimont getting on base after being hit. A single by Michael Flores to leftfield stuffed the bases. Wylie drew a walk scoring Shoemaker. Allen hit a single to the back of the infield grass beyond second base scoring Warnimont. The Union rally made the final 7-4. Justin Machado (1-3) earned the win. Ted Christie (0-2) took the defeat.
 
The two teams will play the rubber game March 2 at 1 p.m.
