Union season over following 3-0 defeat

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The men's soccer team of Union University fell 3-0 to host Campbellsville University in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament semifinal match Friday evening. Campbellsville was seeded No. 1 in the tournament, while Union entered as a four seed. The defeat leaves Union with a final record of 5-13-1. Campbellsville improved to 16-3-1.
 
Alex Pratt took the first shot of the match at 4:15, which was saved by Max Malachiyev. A tackle of Adam Linderholm in the box resulted in Campbellsville being awarded a penalty kick. Kevon Farquharson took the shot in the 20th minute directing a low shot to the right of a lunging Matt Kesler. Farquharson put the Tigers in front 2-0 with a goal at 31:31 off of a free kick. As time faded in the half Joe Shultz had a shot go right of the goal. Union was outshot 8-3 in the half.
 
Union doubled their scoring opportunities in the second half with six shots but none got beyond Malachiyev. Taylor Mayo placed a shot wide in the 52nd minute. Briamst Castro booted a shot at 56:50 that Malachiyev stopped. Malachiyev gathered in a shot from Clayton Martin in the 63rd minute to deny Union a goal. Malachiyev grabbed a shot by Pedro Silva at 70:27. Castro and Cody Styx had shots saved in the 76th minute. Ryan Foster scored on a pass from Roraigh Yearwood at 87:20 to give Campbellsville a 3-0 advantage. Campbellsville managed eight shots in the second half. Kesler made five saves in the game, while Malachiyev had six.
 
This season marks the final year (provisional year) of the NCAA DII membership process. If Union is approved by the NCAA this coming summer to advance to full membership, Union will be playing next season as a full member of the NCAA DII and Gulf South Conference with opportunities to advance to GSC and NCAA DII postseason tournaments.
