CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking loss on the road at Lee University 2-1 in overtime. Union fell to 3-9-1 on the season and 1-9-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 7-3-4 on the season and 6-2-4 in league play.
The loss for Union was the eighth straight loss after starting the season 3-1.
Union and Lee played a scoreless first 80 minutes. Then in the 81
st minute, Lee's Quade Marinell drilled a shot past the Union keeper
Matt Kesler for the match's first goal. As time was winding down, Union's
Seth Guiler tied the match on a loose ball with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
In overtime, the teams were again finding it hard to get scoring opportunities until a red card was given to a Union player with just 38 seconds left in the first overtime. The card resulted in a penalty kick for Lee and Chevon Roberts scored the game-winner.
Kesler played all 99-plus minutes in goal for Union, recording six saves. Tom Halsall had three saves in the same time for Lee.
Lee outshot Union 22-11 in the match, including 10-3 in the first half. The second half shots advantage went to Union 7-6 with OT back in Lee's favor, 1-0.
The road trip continues for Union with a GSC match at Shorter October 27.
