Union women's soccer claims classic title with 5-2 win

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team defeated Missouri Baptist University 5-2 Saturday in the Union University Soccer Classic. The win for Union gave the Lady Bulldogs the classic championship as they won both of their games. Union improved to 2-0 on the season, while Missouri Baptist dropped to 1-3.

Union scored first on a header by Whitney Kramer, assisted by Sara McHenry in the 21st minute of play. Union never trailed in the game and led 2-0 at the half after a goal from Madison Purdy. Early in the second half, Union led 3-0 when Dionna Linn found the back of the net.

Just one minute later, Missouri Baptist answered with a quick goal from Anna Recer. But six minutes later it was Union striking again on a corner kick. Kelsey Gilbert scored on an assist from Linn to lead 4-1. Union added their final goal with Linn's second goal of the night in the 79th minute. Missouri Baptist scored their second goal in the 81st when Recer slipped a ball past the Union goalie.

Emily Waggoner record three saves in the game for Union. Missouri Baptist's Sam Shultze recorded three saves and allowed four goals. Elizabeth Kahn allowed a goal in goalie relief.

Union outshot Missouri Baptist 14-6 in the game. Union's defense did not allow a single shot for the Spartans in the first half.

Up next for Union will be a home game Thursday, September 6 versus North Alabama at 5:00 p.m.
