Union records second highest goal total of season in 3-1 win

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team defeated Asbury (Ky.) University 3-1 Saturday night at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 4-5-2 on the season, while Asbury dropped to 1-7 overall.
 
With the win, Union snapped a four game home losing streak. Their last home win came back on September 1. Union also scored three goals in a match for the first time in eight matches, the 5-2 win over Missouri Baptist September 1 is the season high for goals in a match.
 
Union scored first in the match with a goal from Stefanie King, assisted by Rachael Boswell in the 33rd minute of play. King took Boswell's pass at the top of the box and hammered a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. However, Just two minutes later, Asbury connected on their first shot of the match and tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Cassie Holland. A free kick from Holland found the back of the net, getting through several Union defenders attempts to block it. The score remained 1-1 at the half.
 
In the second half, Union regained the lead in the 55th minute on a goal from Alex Taylor. Taylor then assisted on Union's final goal in the 74th minute. Whitney Kramer scored to put Union up for the 3-1 final.
 
Union's Emily Waggoner recorded a save in her 90 minutes in goal. Jessica Batey started in goal for Asbury, recorded four saves and allowing three goals in her 75 minutes of play. Lizzie Hoffa record one save in the final 15 minutes of the match.
 
Union outshot Asbury 19-3, including 14-0 in the second half.
 
Up next for Union will be a match versus former conference foe and area rival, Freed-Hardeman Tuesday October 9 at 5:00 p.m.
