JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team lost a heart-breaker Monday night on Senior Night at Smith Soccer Complex. Union fell 1-0 in overtime to Cumberland University, dropping to 7-9-2 on the season. Cumberland improved to 15-2 overall, winning their eighth straight contest.
Union and Cumberland were former conference foes in the NAIA's TranSouth Conference. Cumberland is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings and is now a member of the NAIA's MidSouth Conference.
For Union, this marked their fourth loss of the season by just one goal. In fact, each of the last three losses for Union have each come by the score of 1-0. Union's defense has been strong all season, only allowing 1.5 goals scored per game, with their highest total allowed (4)coming to NCAA DII nationally ranked North Alabama.
In the match, Union held Cumberland to zero goals through regulation. Cumberland had scored 68 goals on the season entering the match. Their freshman standout Kelsey Langille leads the NAIA in scoring with 34 goals on the season.
Union outshot Cumberland 6-4 in the first half. However, the Bulldogs of Cumberland controlled the second half by an 8-3 count. Cumberland fired the only shot in overtime, when Katilin Phillips scored on an assist from Shauna Gilpin to give her team the win.
Emily Waggoner recorded four saves in the loss, while Lindsay Kitson had one save in her shutout victory in goal for Cumberland.
