JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team lost the series to No. 30 Young Harris College on opening weekend. The Mountain Lions won the first two games Saturday afternoon, and picked up the sweep in the third game Sunday afternoon. Young Harris improved to 3-0 on the season. Union fell to 0-3 overall on this year's campaign.
In the first game of the series, it seemed to be a pitcher's duel early as both starters went scoreless into the fourth inning. Young Harris's Wallace homered to the right side in the fourth inning which scored two runs. They strung a couple more hits together and plated another after a RBI single by Bray scored Begora. Union found some life in the seventh inning as
Grant Ross homered to right center making the score 3-1 after the seventh. Young Harris plated two more in the top of the ninth, but the Bulldogs couldn't rally falling short with a final score of 4-2.
Carson Chavies led the Bulldogs in game one with two hits including a double. Sam Pointdexter started on the mound for Union throwing five and two third innings earning seven strikeouts, and giving up three runs on five hits and two walks.
Eli Snelson pitched in relief throwing 3.1 innings giving up one run on two hits.
In the second game, Union rallied early and plated six runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. The early rally by the Bulldogs must have woken up the bats of Young Harris as they went on to score 17 unanswered runs from the second to the 7th inning. In this stretch they scored 17 runs on 11 hits. Eight of the 11 hits were extra base hits, and five were homerun's.
Blake Barrett and
Canyon Pace led Union with two hits a piece in the second game. Lane Evens started on the mound for Union throwing three innings earning three strikeouts. He gave up one run on two hits. Union threw six other Bulldogs in relief.
In Sundays game, Young Harris came out strong and scored 13 unanswered runs in the first seven innings. Union plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth off of a two run homerun from
Grayson Swanson.
Mitch Sisk led Union with two hits in this game.
Ryan Evans started on the mound for the Bulldogs throwing two and one third innings giving up eight runs on six hits. Five other Bulldogs threw in relief.
