JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep over West Liberty University Friday at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 12-7 and the second game 7-3. Union improved to 2-3 on the season, while West Liberty opened 0-2.Â
Union's first-year head coach,
Casey McGehee, earned career wins number one and number two on the day.Â
In the first game, West Liberty scored first with a run in the top of the first, but Union responded with a run in the bottom of the first.
Blake Barrett doubled, driving in
Carson Chavies. Union added three more in the third on a 2-RBI single from
Mitch Sisk and another RBI from Barrett.
Trey Frierson tripled in the fifth, driving in two and Sisk added two more RBI on a single in the seventh. After West Liberty cut the Union lead to just two at 8-6 in the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs put the game away with four in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Hardy, Sisk, and
Tanner Parmely each added RBI in the frame.
Sam Poindexter (1-1) earned the win, tossing seven innings with five hits, two runs, one earned, and 10 strikeouts.
Ryan Middleton earned his first save with 1.1 innings of work with two hits, no earned runs, and two strikeouts. Sisk was 3-for-6 with six RBI to lead the Bulldogs. Barrett and Frierson added two hits and two RBI, while
Britt Netterville had two hits and two runs scored.Â
Union led from start to finish in game two, scoring twice in the first, once in the third, three times in the fourth, and once in the fifth. Netterville and Sisk added one RBI each in the first and Netterville drove in another run in the third. In the fourth,
Grant Ross got his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Netterville added to his RBI total with one in the fourth also. Ross singled in his second RBI of the game in the fifth.
Eli Snelson (1-0) tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one earned with two strikeouts.
Dylan Thomas came in and got a big strikeout with runners on base in the sixth to relieve Snelson.
AJ Zeak tossed the final inning for Union. Netterville led the team with a 3-for-4 game and four RBI. Ross added two hits and two RBI, while Chavies and Barrett both had two hits each.Â
The same two teams will be back in action for another doubleheader, Saturday, February 11 at 1 p.m. at Fesmire field. Admission is free this weekend or keep up with the action onÂ
