Before Union
Smith prepped at Sacred Heart of Jesus High School, where he played four years of baseball and two years of basketball. On the field, Smith earned 2019 all-district honors and was the three-time winner of the Sacred Heart "Team Before Self" Award. He was selected to the all-tournament team in the 2016 Net Elite Perfect Game Summer Showcase.

Off the field, Smith was his class salutatorian and a member of both the National Honors Society and his student government. He compiled a number of academic accolades, including an AP Scholar Award, the TBCA Scholar-Athlete Award, membership in the Beta Club, the AP Biology Highest GPA Award, Spanish 2 Highest GPA Award, and Honors Algebra 2 Highest GPA Award.
