ROME, Ga. - The Union University baseball posted a 5-4 win at Shorter University Friday afternoon. Union improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 4-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play. 

The win for Union was the second straight and fifth in the last six games. 

The first run for both teams came on a sacrifice fly, Shorter in the bottom of the first and Union in the top of the second. Ben Smith's RBI fly ball drove in Mitch Sisk to tie the game. Shorter added two runs in the bottom of the second and the 3-1 lead for the Hawks stood until the fifth. 

Union tied the game with RBI singles from Grayson Swanson and Sisk. In the sixth, Union took its first lead with an RBI single from Trey Frierson. Swanson added to the lead with an RBI sac fly. 

Sam Poindexter (2-1), the reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week, posted a complete game. He went nine innings, allowing five hits and four runs, with three strikeouts and five walks. 

Union outhit Shorter 6-5 as five Union players recorded a hit. Swanson led the way with a 2-for-3 day, two RBI, and a run scored. Five different players scored a run in the game. 

The two teams will close the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 10 a.m. central time in Rome.
