JACKSON, Tenn. - Five members of the 2022-23 Union University men's golf team are playing in the 2022 Tennessee State Amateur Championships. The five qualified at their home courses in the previous weeks. The event is hosted by the Tennessee Golf Association and is being played at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
The five players included returning sophomores
JJ Zimmer (Jackson, Tenn./Crockett County HS),
Gray Campbell (Humboldt, Tenn./Crockett County HS), and
Timothy Pinkston (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy). Two newcomers entering Union this year as freshmen include
Jackson Hughey (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy of Knoxville) and
Will Brown (Jackson, Tenn./Trinity Christian Academy).
FIRST ROUND UPDATE: Zimmer and Hughey fired scores of 66 on the first day. The duo was in a tie for first place after round one. Campbell finished T12 with a 69. Pinkston shot even par 70, goof for T20, while Brown's 80 put him in T128.Â
ROUND TWO UPDATE: Zimmer shot a second round 71, dropping him from the lead but still remaining in the top-10. Zimmer made the cut and will play round three Thursday. The other four failed to make the cut. Hughey shot a second round 82, Campbell 80, Pinkston 82, and Brown posted his best round of 76 in round two. Hughey missed the cut by one shot, while Campbell missed the cut by just two shots.Â
