MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University softball team won game three of the three-game series at the University of Montevallo this weekend. Union won game three 8-7. In the doubleheader Saturday, Montevallo topped Union 3-2 and 20-2. Union is now 10-16 on the season and 4-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo moved to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in league play.Â
In the third game Sunday, Montevello scored twice in the first. However, Union exploded for eight runs in the second inning. Macy Neal started and ended the 8-run rally. She got the scoring started with a solo home run and then drove in the final two runs of the inning with a double.
Morgan Jennings,
Baylee Stewart, and Mackenzie David also had RBI hits in the inning. Union made those eight runs hold up as
Olivia Baker (4-4) earned the win with 4.2 innings of work with five strikeouts.
Reese Taylor tossed a third of an inning, and
Laken DiStefano (2) pitched two innings of no-hit ball for the save. Neal led Union with three hits and three RBI.Â
Saturday's first game, Jennings and
Idalia Alarcon led with two hits, while
Bryleigh Carneal had Union's only RBI. Distefano (1-5) took the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing three runs, with six strikeouts, six walks, on just four hits.Â
In game two, Union did not score until the sixth inning on RBI singles from Stewart and
Fallon Groves. Taylor (4-4) took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings with three strikeouts, six runs, four earned on seven hits.
Kira Finkley tossed two innings of relief.
Up next for Union will be a 3-game road series at Christian Brothers, March 26-27. Union's midweek road games at West Florida have been canceled due to expected rain in Florida this week.
