ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Union University softball team split with Henderson State University in a non-conference double header on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Reddies 4-2 in the first game, and won 7-6 in nine innings in the second game. Union moved to 9-14 overall, and HSU moved to 6-22 on the season.
In the first game, HSU struck first, scoring two runs in the third innings, and extending its lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Union scored two runs in the seventh inning, but HSU held on for the 4-2 win.
Morgan Jennings and
Macey Neal led with one RBI each. Jennings, Neal, and
Mackenzi David each logged a hit for the Lady Bulldogs.
Reese Taylor (4-3) pitched all six innings for the Lady Bulldogs, earning three strikeouts. She allowed four runs on five hits and one walk.
In the second game, Union scored in the top of the first inning as
Alyssa Ward stole home.
Baylee Stewart then singled to right field, driving in Jennings. The Lady Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead when Stewart scored on a double from David. The Reddies answered back in the bottom of the inning scoring three runs of their own and tying the game 3-3. HSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the sixth, Union plated two runs to tie the game again. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. Union scored one run in the top of the eighth, but the Reddies rallied for a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game for the third time, 6-6. Bryleigh Carneal, earning Union the 7-6 win. Jennings, Stewart, and David led Union with 3 hits each. Five different players were credited for RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs.
Kira Finkley started for Union in the circle throwing 0.1 innings. She allowed three runs on three hits and one walk.
Laken DiStefano (1-4) pitched in relief and earned the win, throwing 8.2 innings earning nine strikeouts. She allowed three runs on three hits and two walks.
Up next for Union is a three game conference series on the road against the University of Montevallo. The first game is set to take place Saturday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m.
