YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The Union University baseball dropped three games to open the season at Young Harris College Friday and Saturday. Union lost 7-0 Friday and then was edged 4-3 and 3-2 in the Saturday double-header. This was the opening series for both schools.Â
In Friday's game, it was a pitching duel through the first five innings. Union's
Walker Adkisson (0-1) took the loss. He tossed the first four innings of scoreless ball, before allowing his only run of the game in the fifth inning. He allowed five hits, one run, with three strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work.
Sam Poindexter allowed six runs in 1.2 innings, while
Jake Jewell tossed the final 1.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Britt Netterville and
Jake Baker had one hit each for Union.Â
The first game Saturday, Union scored first with a run in the fourth. Young Harris tied the game in the bottom of the frame, then took the lead with two runs in the fifth. Union tied the game in the sixth, before Young Harris took the lead in the sixth. Neither team scored in the final three innings. Union outhit Young Harris 5-3 with
Josh Bozoian leading the way with a 2-for-4 game. Barrett hit the season's first home run with a 2-RBI blast in the sixth.
Luke Williamson got the start and tossed four innings, allowing just one run with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
AJ Zeak,
Jack Rasmussen (0-1), and
Ryan Middleton combined for the final four innings of relief, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and a walk.Â
Game three of the series again had Union scoring first with a run in the second. Young Harris tied the game in the second and took a 3-1 lead with two in the third. Union got its second home run of the season from
Grayson Swanson with a solo shot in the fourth. The remaining three innings of the 7-inning game were scoreless for both teams. Union was outhit 5-4 in the game. Swanson led with a 2-for-3 game with an RBI and two runs.
Sam McMillin (0-1) took another close loss on the weekend, tossing five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Stuart Edge tossed the final inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout.Â
Up next for Union will be its home opener, a 4-game series at Fesmire Field Friday and Saturday, February 11-12. Double-headers start at 1 p.m. each day.
