JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball posted a pair of victories Friday afternoon against West Liberty University at Fesmire Field. The home openers had Union's offense on display, winning the first game 17-2 and the second game 13-1. Union improved to 2-3 on the season, while West Liberty dropped to 0-2.Â
Union had a combined no-hitter going in the second game. However, West Liberty got an RBI single in the top of the last inning (7-inning) with two outs to break up the no-hitter and the shutout on one swing.Â
Graduate student
Sam McMillin (1-1) went five innings in the start, allowing no hits, no runs, with 12 strikeouts and four walks.
Ryan Evans of Newbern, Tenn. continued the no-hitter with a scoreless and hitless sixth inning of work.
Stuart Edge tossed the final inning, allowing one run on one hit with two walks. Offensive,
Trey Frierson and
Grayson Swanson led with three hits each. Swanson led with six RBI including a grand slam, while
Josh Bozoian added four RBI including 3-RBI double.Â
Game one started with lots of offense for both teams in a game where the wind was gusting at over 20 MPH. West Liberty scored two runs in the first on a 2-run home run. Union added five in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Swanson was again the offensive leader with a 4-6 game with four RBI.
Jake Baker was 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI, while Bozoian added four RBI.
Patrick Music added three hits also. Union used four pitchers to get the nine-inning win.
Walker Adkisson started and allowed two runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He was lifted after 2.1 innings of work.
Sam Poindexter (1-0) tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing the hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Dylan Thomas tossed one inning with a strikeout, while
Ethan Orwig tossed the final inning with two strikeouts. Neither Thomas or Orwig allowed a hit or run.Â
