Union softball fall to No. 26 Alabama Huntsville

Huntsville, Ala. – The Union University softball team fell in all three games on the road this past weekend against the University of Alabama Huntsville. Union lost 3-6 in the first game, 2-3 in the second game, and 4-10 in the third game. Union fell to 5-11 overall on the season and 2-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville improved to 11-4 on the season and 3-3 in league play.
 
In the first game, Union scored first in the fourth inning, but the Chargers answered back in the bottom of the inning taking the lead after four innings 4-1. The Chargers kept the lead throughout the game winning 6-3. Brook Puckett led Union in both hits and RBI's with two each. Laken DiStefano started in the circle for the Bulldogs tossing 4.0 innings earning two strikeouts. She allowed four runs on two hits and seven walks. Olivia Baker pitched in relief throwing 2.0 innings. She allowed two runs on two hits and one walk.
 
In the second game, much like the first the Bulldogs scored first plating one run in the second and another in the third. The Chargers scored their first run in the fourth inning, and then rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring one more forcing the game into extra innings. The Chargers walked it off in the bottom of the eighth ending the game with a final score of 2-3. Bryleigh Carneal led Union with two hits, Mackenzi David and Carneal led the team in RBI's with one a piece. Kira Finkley started in the circle for Union throwing 5.0 innings earning three strikeouts. She allowed one run on two hits and four walks. DiStefano pitched in relief throwing 2.0 innings earning one strikeout. She allowed two runs on two hits and one walk.
 
In the third game, the Chargers took the lead early when they scored one in the second inning. Union would take the lead in the third when they scored three runs. Union would lose the lead in the fifth and go on to fall to the Chargers with a final score of 4-10.  Finkley led Union in both hit and RBI's with two a piece. Baker started in the circle for Union tossing 4.0 innings earning three strikeouts. She allowed two runs on three hits and four walks. Reese Taylor pitched in relief throwing 1.0 innings earning three strikeouts, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks. Charli Rice also pitched in relief throwing 1.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.
 
Up next for Union is a three game conference series at home as they take on the Wolves of the University of West Georgia. The first game of the series will take place Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m.
