Union softball wins final game of UWG series

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team won the final game of a three game series against the University of West Georgia 9-5 Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union lost both games in a doubleheader played Friday, 8-1 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game. Union moved to 6-13 on the season and 3-6 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia moved to 8-12 overall and 2-7 in the GSC. 

In the first game, West Georgia got on the board after three scoreless innings thanks to a pair of double from Kristyn Nix and Emma Bailey that drove in two runs apiece to put the Wolves up 4-0. The Wolves scored two more runs in the fifth inning. Union sophomore Macey Neal hit a triple down the left field line to drive in Grace White in the sixth inning to make the score 6-1. West Georgia scored two more runs in the seventh to set the final score at 8-1. Six different players had one hit for Union. Kira Finkley pitched the first three innings, earning two strike outs. Olivia Baker pitched the final four innings for the Lady Bulldogs, striking out four.

In the second game, West Georgia's R.J. Janke hit a three-run home run to put the Wolves up 3-0 in the third inning. Hannah Scarbrough homered in the sixth to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Union freshman Morgan Jennings doubled to left field with the bases loaded and two outs, driving in Idalia Alarcon, Harley Bartholomew, and Mackenzi David to cut the lead to two. The Wolves were able to hang on to win the game 5-3. Laken DiStefano pitched five innings for Union, striking out four. Reese Taylor pitched the final two innings, striking out two. 

In the third game, Union scored first in the second inning when Macey Neal scored on a fielder's choice. West Georgia tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to earn a 5-1 lead. Union added three more runs in the fifth. Grace White singled to center field, driving in Morgan Jennings. Harley Bartholomew and Alyssa Ward walked back-to-back with the bases loaded, scoring Fallon Groves and Mackenzi David. West Georgia rallied in the sixth, scoring two runs and cutting the lead to five, 8-3. Union earned an insurance run when Macey Neal singled to shortstop to drive in Jennings and give the Lady Bulldogs a 9-3 lead. The Wolves scored two more runs in the seventh, but Union earned the 9-5 win. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Jennings with three hits and two runs. Seven other Lady Bulldogs logged a hit in the game. Reese Taylor earned the win in the circle, pitching the entire game for Union and striking out two.  

Up next for Union is a home nonconference doubleheader against Miles College Tuesday, March 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
