Union baseball sweeps Lane in rain-soaked doubleheader

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Lane College Tuesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 6-2 and the second game 11-3. Union improved to 6-7 overall, while Lane dropped to 5-5 on the season. 

Union's Ryan Lee put Union up 3-0 in the bottom of the second of the first game with a towering 3-run home run to centerfield. After Lane scored twice in the eighth to cut the deficit to 3-2, Union added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Zeitler cleared the bases with a 2-RBI double, then stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the catch. Joe Gee in his first start of the season had two infield hits to lead Union, while Lee and Zietler led with three and two RBI each. Five different players recorded the six hits on the day for Union. Union used four pitchers. Logan Portis started and went four innings with two hits, no runs, five strikeouts and one walk. Andrey Arnett (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing three innings with one run on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Owen Bartholomew and Sam McMillin both tossed one inning each. 

Game two was all Union, scoring runs in every inning except the first. Union started with two in the second, added a run in the third, two more in the fourth, five in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Lane scored twice in the sixth and one in the seventh. Lee had the first RBI of the second game as well with a single in the second. John Plattner in his first start of the season, got the fifth inning going with a 2-RBI double down the left field line. Union had just six hits in the game, but took advantage of seven walks and four Lane errors in game two. Lee led with two hits. Union used five pitchers in the game, starting with Cooper Bullough, going three innings, allowing no runs on one hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Brad Weber (1-0) earned the win, tossing two innings in relief, allowing no runs on no hits with two strikeouts. Taylor Graves, Dylan Thomas, and Christian Dudley each made their season debuts in the game, combining for the final six outs. 

Union will look to play its first road games of the year after having one non-conference road trip rained out. Union travels to No. 25 Mississippi College this weekend for its second GSC weekend of the year.
