Union baseball splits at Mississippi College in Saturday DH

CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University baseball team split its first GSC road doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon versus Mississippi College. Union won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings and then lost the second game 5-1. Union moved to 7-8 on the season, and 2-3 in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College moved to 9-7 overall, and 4-1 in GSC play.

The first game was a pitching duel through the first three scoreless innings, The Choctaws struck first in the bottom of the fourth with a single that scored the first run of the game, and a bases loaded walk that made the score 2-0 through four innings. In the seventh inning the Bulldogs answered with a Ryan Lee (1-4) two-run home run that scored Austin Zeitler (2-for-5) and tied the game at 2-2. MC answered in the bottom of the seventh after a bunt single scored a run to make the score 3-2 Choctaws. Zeitler singled in the top of the eighth to score A'Darius Pugh (1-for-5) and tied the game again at 3-3. In the top half of the tenth, Zeitler struck again with his second RBI on a single to right field that scored Pugh and put the Bulldogs ahead 4-3. That score stood as Parker Shreve (1) shut the door in the bottom of the tenth for his first save. Ryan Mets started the game for Union and went six complete innings with three earned runs and five strikeouts. Logan Portis (1-0) relieved Mets and threw three complete innings giving up no runs, two hits, and five strikeouts for the win. Shreve earned the save with tone complete inning, no hits, and one strikeout. 

In the second game, the Choctaws took the win with a final of 5-1. Union scored once in the top of the third with an A'Darius Pugh (2-for-3) RBI groundout that scored Garrett Guymon (2-for-3). The Choctaws put up a four run fourth and one run sixth to secure the win 5-1 in game two of the three game series. Brandon Maxwell (0-2) started on the mound for Union and went 5.1 innings with five earned runs, and seven strikeouts. Andrey Arnett relieved Maxwell and throw 0.2 innings with no hits or runs given up.

Up next for Union will be the third game of the series against MC, a single game March 1 at 1 p.m. in Clinton.
