Union baseball takes game in VSU series

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University baseball team split double-header against Valdosta State University 8-1, and 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. They loss the third game of the series, 8-5.  Union is now 7-9 on the season and 1-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Blazers scored their first run of the game in the first inning. The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the third inning off a double from Hayden Lewis. VSU scored another run in the fourth and had a big inning scoring three more runs in the fifth. Valdosta State scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, winning 8-1. 

Logan Portis (1-2) took the loss for Union after tossing 4.0 innings giving up seven runs off seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Walker Adkisson pitched four innings in relief giving up one run off four hits with one walk. 

Lewis' scored Charlie Ellis in the first inning of the second game Sunday. VSU scored two runs in the second inning to jump ahead by one run. Lewis hit his second RBI of the game as he singled to right field, scoring Ellis once again. Nolen Milton stole home to score Union's third run of the game, followed by a run from Lewis scoring off a wild pitch. Josh Bozoian scored Union's last run of the third inning. Cooper Bullough singled up the middle to score Josh Frantz in the fifth. Lewis recorded his fourth RBI of the game after hitting a two-run homer over the left center wall. VSU scored one run in the bottom of the seventh. Union won 8-5. 

Ryan Mets (2-2) recorded the win for Union after tossing five innings giving up four runs off of seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Brandon Maxwell pitched two innings in relief while giving up one run off of four hits. 

Valdosta State scored their first run in the first inning. Neither team scored again until the fourth when Caleb DeMarigny singled to left field scoring Lewis. VSU responded with another run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Frantz scored in the sixth inning for Union. VSU scored fives runs between the sixth and seventh inning to jump up 7-2. Another run scored in the bottom of the eighth inning put the Blazers up 8-2. Tyler Thomas singled up the middle in the top of the ninth to score Milton. Frantz hit a two RBI double to bring the score to 8-5. Union was unable to make up the difference in the final inning. 

Maxwell tossed five innings for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs off of six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Spencer Woods (2-1) took the loss for Union after giving up five runs on four hits with two walks. Parker Shreve finished the game pitching 1.2 innings giving up one run off of two hits with one strikeout and one walk. 

Up next for Union is conference series against Auburn University at Montgomery starting Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
