ROME, Ga. - The Union University baseball team closed out the weekend series at Shorter University with a 10-5 win in game three of the series. Shorter edged Union 4-3 and 7-6 in the Saturday double-header. Union is now 9-18 overall and 3-12 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improved to 16-12 overall and 9-8 in league play.
In the series finale, Union busted out for 10 runs on 14 hits. Union scored two runs in the first and two more in the second. Union led 5-4 in the sixth when the Bulldogs exploded for five runs to put the game away. Union got doubles from
Caleb DeMarigny and
Josh Bozoian. DeMarigny led with four hits while Bozoian led with four RBI in the game.
Scott Shearer (1-2) earned the win tossing 6.1 innings allowing five run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Spencer Woods tossed teh final 2.2 innings of scoreless work, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.
Game one had Union leading 3-0 after four innings of play. However, four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the 9-inning game proved to be the difference. Shorter out-hit Union 9-8 with Union committing three errors in the loss.
Nolen Milton homered in the game for the Bulldogs' first run. It was his XX of the year. Milton,
Josh Frantz, and
Zane Phillips led with two hits each while
Dacoda Stone led with two RBI.
Brandon Maxwell (1-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Walker Adkisson tossed 1.1 innings of hitless relief with a strikeout.
Game two of the Saturday double-header again had Union leading early. The Bulldogs scored three runs int he first and led 4-2 after three innings. Shorter tied the game with two runs in the sixth, but Union regained control in the seventh to lead 6-4 going into the bottom of the last inning. Shorter scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including back-to-back walks to steal another win from Union.
Logan Portis took the loss, tossing the final 1.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Ryan Mets tossed 5.1 innings in the start, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Stone and Frantz led with two hits each, while Frantz led with two RBI.
Up next for Union will be a road game at UT Martin Wednesday, March 27.
