JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team dropped the weekend Gulf South Conference series to the University of Montevallo. Montevallo won both games Saturday, 3-1 and then 8-6. Montevallo then spoiled a 5-run Union rally in the series finale 13-11 in 11 innings. Union dropped to 8-15 overall and 2-10 in league play. Montevall improved to 13-12 overall and 10-5 in conference play.
In the final game of the series. Union trailed 11-6 heading into the bottom of the eight inning. Union scored three runs to cut into the deficit with the help of an RBI single by Heyden Lewis and then a 2-RBI single from
Tyler Thomas. Union tied the game in the ninth with a groundout RBI from
Cooper Bullough followed by a sacrifice fly from
Josh Frantz to scored Calel DeMarigny. Montevallo then hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to get the win. It was the second homer of the game for the Falcons. T. Krabbe for the Falcons hit for the cycle in the win. Union got big hits early in the game including an RBI double from
Charlie Ellis and an RBI triple from
Drew Hill. Union got 17 hits in the game from 11 different hitters. DeMarigny and Lewis led with three hits each. Three pitchers pitched in the game for Union.
Ryan Mets got the start, going 2/3rd inning.
Walker Adkisson tossed the next 4.1 innings. Scott Schearer (0-2) took the loss, allowing 12 hits, six runs, with five strikeouts and six walks.
In the first game Saturday, Union lost 3-1. Union trailed 1-0 after a Falcon run in the sixth. Union tied the game in the seventh and then gave up two runs in the top of the ninth inning to fall 3-1. Union's lone run came on a bases loaded walk to DeMarigny to score
Zane Phillips. Union out hit Montevallo 6-5 in the game and committed the game's only error.
Dacoda Stone and Lewis led Union with two hits each.
Brandon Maxwell (1-3) took the tough loss, going 8.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs with six strikeouts and two walks.
Spencer Woods tossed the final 2/3 inning.
In the second game Saturday, Union fell 8-6, rallying late to keep it close. Union led 2-0 after a 2-RBI single from DeMarigny in the third. Montevallo scored three in the fourth, but Union tied the game in the fourth. Montevallo then scored five runs in the fifth. Union got three runs in the sixth but it was not enough. A 2-RBI double from Phillips was the big hit for Union in the sixth. Union out hit the Falcons for the second time in on the day, 8-7.
Nolen Milton, DeMarigny, Phillips, and Hill each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Logan Portis (1-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits with three strikouts and no walks in four innings of work.
Kory Pollard and Bullough also pitched for Union.
Up next in a single non-conference game, Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m. versus Harding University at Fesmire Field.
