JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team fell 10-9 in 12 innings to region foe Harding University. Union dropped to 8-16 on the season, while Harding improved to 16-11 overall.
This was the second straight extra inning loss for the Bulldogs after falling 13-11 in 11 innings in their last outing versus Auburn-Montgomery.
Union's
Josh Bozoian began his big day with a 3-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning. A
Nolen Milton RBI single in the second put Union up 4-0. Harding rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh to lead 6-4. Union cut the deficit to one run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from
Caleb DeMarigny.
The score remained 6-5 in favor of Harding until the very active ninth inning. Harding tacked on what seemed to be a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to lead 8-5. However, Union scored three in the bottom of the ninth to force extras. Bozoian tripled in two runs, followed by an RBI single from
Hayden Lewis to tie the game at 9-9.
In the 12th inning, Harding added two runs to take the 10-8 lead. Union scored a run in the bottom of the 12th on a leadoff home run from
Eli Thibado but that was the end of the scoring threat for the Bulldogs.
Harding outhit Union 15-14, while Union's defense struggled with six errors.
Union had eight different players record a hit, led by Bozoian with four hits and five RBI. Milton added three hits for Union. The two teams combined to use 10 pitchers in the game with Union trotting four out to the mound.
Spencer Woods started, going four innings with two runs on five hits.
Cooper Bullough and
Ryan Mets combined to pitch four innings in relief.
Logan Portis (1-5) tossed the final four innings, allowing four runs, two earned on three hits.
Union steps back into Gulf South Conference play this weekend at Shorter University.
